Blackout the Bedroom for Better Sleep

Did you know that your brain actually shrinks in size when you chronically get less than 7 hours of sleep per night? YIKES! If that isn’t bad enough, studies have linked sleep deprivation to cancer, Alzheimer’s, insulin resistance, and depression. Conversely, research shows that good quality sleep:

  • Strengthens your immune system
  • Stabilizes your hormones
  • Boosts your metabolism
  • Increases energy levels
  • Improves memory
  • Decreases inflammation
  • Improves overall brain function

With all the incredible benefits to getting quality sleep, why not do our best to optimize it? In his article, Sleep Problems? Here’s 21 Tips To Get The Best Sleep Evermy favorite health podcaster and sleep expert, Shawn Stevenson, lists 21 great strategies to do just that.

Among the amazing tips he provides, number 9 is where we come in. “GET IT BLACKED OUT.” Many people don’t know this, but on our skin there are actually light receptors that send messages to our brain and other organs. These messages can alter our circadian rhythm and disrupt our sleep patterns. Furthermore, because of these light receptors on the skin, glamorous sleeping masks just don’t cut it.

So what can you do to create a truly blacked out out bedroom?

Du-dunana!!!…Blackout shades and/or draperies! For an entirely blacked out room, blackout shades with side channels remove all traces of light by eliminating light gaps. The video below is a great example of blackout shades with side channels. Although it is for a media room, the zero light concept still applies!

However, if roller shades aren’t your thing, and you want something with a little more flair, there are hundreds of blackout drapery fabrics available to match any décor. Leave them open in the day and draw them closed at night. In addition, for a double whammy, you can do blackout shades AND blackout draperies! It all might seem crazy, but speaking from personal experience, once my husband and I completely blacked out our bedroom, the quality of our sleep improved drastically!
